What should I look for when considering treatment for an Autism Spectrum Disorder?

When considering where to go for treatment of an Autism Spectrum Disorder, it is important to establish the clinicians experience with Autism Spectrum Disorders and what type of treatment is offered. There are many different types of Autism therapy and you will want to consider them carefully. Some families find it beneficial to combine various treatment approaches such as combining a relationship based approach with a behavioral approach.

What treatment model is used at the Autism Assessment and Treatment Center?

Our services are relationship based services. We use the Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based model otherwise known as the DIR/Floortime approach by Stanley Greenspan. This model takes into account which developmental level your child is functioning at emotionally and intellectually and helps the child to move up the developmental ladder to achieve higher emotional and intellectual milestones and to enhance their social development. Further information regarding this model can be found at http://www.icdl.com/dirFloortime/overview/index.shtml. This model is the basis of our treatment, however we also provide interventions to help with more immediate concerns such as difficulty with transitioning or how to handle “meltdowns.” We also provide support for the caregivers regarding any stressors they may be experiencing as they raise a special needs child.

What age ranges do you treat?

We work with individuals across the lifespan. We work with children, adolescents, and adults.
